Why Muslims Say Bismillah Before Everything

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

“Every matter of importance that does not begin with the name of Allah is cut off from blessing.” — Musnad Ahmad, graded Hasan by Ibn al-Salah

7 Hadith Narrations When it is Obligatory 4-Madhab Rulings
Topic context: This page supports the main Bismillah phrase guide within the Islamic phrases and Duas silos. It answers the why behind the practice — the theological, legal, and spiritual reasons every Muslim begins significant acts with Bismillah. Last reviewed: September 2026.

The BasmalaBismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim (In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful) — opens 113 of 114 Quranic surahs and is the phrase with which Muslims begin every significant act of life. But why? The reasons are theological, legal, and deeply spiritual — rooted in seven distinct hadith narrations, three Quranic principles, and a legal framework that varies in detail across the four madhabs.

1. The Quranic Foundation — Three Principles

Principle 1: Tasmiyah as Divine Attribution

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

Beginning with Allah’s name attributes the act to its true source — Allah is the One who enables every act. This counters human arrogance (kibr) and establishes Tawakkul (reliance on Allah) before beginning. Source: Quran 1:1 — the Quran itself opens with Bismillah.

Principle 2: Seeking Barakah (Blessing)

The hadith of Ahmad establishes that acts without Bismillah are abtar (cut off) — i.e., lacking in barakah. Barakah in Islamic theology is the divine abundance Allah places in permissible acts. Bismillah is the formal opening of that channel. Without it, the act may be complete physically but lacking in spiritual benefit.

Principle 3: Shaytan’s Exclusion

The Prophet ﷺ established that saying Bismillah when entering the home prevents Shaytan from joining for the night — and saying it before eating prevents Shaytan from sharing the food. “When a man enters his house and mentions Allah upon entry and upon eating, Shaytan says: ‘No lodging and no supper for us.’” — Sahih Muslim, Book of Drinks (Kitab al-Ashriba), Hadith 2018, graded Sahih.

2. The 7 Key Hadith Narrations

HADITH 1

“Every matter of importance that does not begin with Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim is cut off from blessing.”
— Musnad Ahmad, Hadith 8624, Book of Musnad al-Ansar; graded Hasan by Ibn al-Salah and al-Suyuti

HADITH 2 — Before Eating

“Mention Allah’s name, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is nearest to you.”
— Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Food (Kitab al-Atʿima), Hadith 5376, graded Sahih

HADITH 3 — Before Slaughter

“Slaughter with Bismillah. If you forget, then eat (it is permitted), for the Muslim’s omission is forgiven.”
— Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Slaughtering (Kitab al-Dhaba’ih), Hadith 5507, graded Sahih

HADITH 4 — Before Wudu

“There is no Wudu for one who does not mention Allah’s name upon it.”
— Sunan Abi Dawud, Book of Purification (Kitab al-Taharah), Hadith 101, graded Hasan by al-Albani and Ibn al-Salah

HADITH 5 — Before Entering Home

“When a man enters his home and mentions the name of Allah upon entry and upon eating, Shaytan says: ‘No lodging for you here and no supper.’”
— Sahih Muslim, Book of Drinks (Kitab al-Ashriba), Hadith 2018, graded Sahih

HADITH 6 — Before Intimacy

“If any of you, when approaching his wife, says: Bismillah, allahumma jannibna al-shaytan… any child they produce will not be harmed by Shaytan.”
— Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Marriage (Kitab al-Nikah), Hadith 5165, graded Sahih

HADITH 7 — Basmala in Quran

The first revelation (Quran 96:1) begins with Iqra’ (Read), and the Basmala was the first complete verse revealed as the opener of every surah — establishing recitation itself as Bismillah-prefaced worship. The Quran opens 113 of 114 surahs with Bismillah.
— Tafsir Ibn Kathir on Surah al-Fatihah (1:1)

3. When is Bismillah Obligatory vs Recommended? — 4-Madhab Ruling Table

4. What if You Forget to Say Bismillah?

Before Eating — Forgot?
Say “Bismillah awwalahu wa akhirahu” (In the name of Allah, its beginning and its end) when you remember.
— Sunan Abi Dawud, Book of Food (Kitab al-Atʿima), Hadith 3767, graded Sahih by al-Albani
Before Slaughter — Forgot?
Hanafi, Maliki, Hanbali: if forgotten (not deliberately omitted), the meat is still halal. Deliberate omission = haram. — Ibn Qudamah, al-Mughni, Vol. 9.
Before Wudu — Forgot?
Wudu is valid (Sunnah was omitted but Fard completed). The Hanbali who views it Wajib considers Wudu deficient, not invalid. — Scholarly consensus.
