TAHARAH — SALAH — WUDU — DEFINITION
What is Wudu in Islam?
“O you who believe! When you rise for prayer, wash your faces and your hands to the elbows, wipe your heads, and wash your feet to the ankles.” — Quran 5:6
Wudu (Arabic: وُضُوء, also written Wudhu or Wuzu) is the Islamic act of ritual purification using water before performing Salah, Tawaf (circumambulation of the Kaʿbah), or touching the Quran. It removes the state of Hadath Asghar (minor ritual impurity) caused by acts such as using the toilet, deep sleep, or passing gas. Wudu is a Shart (pre-condition) for valid Salah — prayer performed without Wudu is legally non-existent (batil).
The Quranic Command for Wudu
“O you who believe! When you rise for prayer, wash your faces and your hands to the elbows, wipe your heads, and wash your feet to the ankles…” — Quran 5:6
Quran 5:6 is the primary legislative source for Wudu. It establishes the 4 obligatory acts (Arkan) directly: (1) washing the face (Ghusl al-Wajh), (2) washing the arms to the elbows (Ghusl al-Yadayn), (3) wiping the head (Mash al-Ras), and (4) washing the feet to the ankles (Ghusl al-Qadamayn). The verse also covers Tayammum (dry ablution) as the alternative when water is unavailable — establishing both in one ayah, showing their intimate legal connection.
The Definition of Wudu in Islamic Law
Linguistic Definition
From the Arabic root W-D-ʿ (و-ض-أ) meaning cleanliness and brightness. The word Wudu itself carries the sense of radiance — referencing the Nur (light) the Prophet ﷺ said would emanate from the limbs washed in Wudu on the Day of Judgement.
Technical (Sharʿi) Definition
The use of pure water (Maʿ Mutlaq) on specific limbs (face, arms, head, feet) in a defined sequence with the intention of removing Hadath Asghar, establishing the legal state of ritual purity (Taharah) required for acts of worship.
Legal Status
Wudu is a Shart (condition) — not just a Rukn (pillar) — for Salah. This means it must exist before Salah begins, not just during it. A Salah begun without Wudu is automatically invalid, regardless of whether the person later realises the error.
When is Wudu Required?
| Act of Worship | Wudu Required? | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Salah (all types) | Fard (obligatory) | Quran 5:6; Sahih Muslim, Book of Purification (Kitab al-Taharah), Hadith 224, graded Sahih |
| Tawaf (Kaʿbah circumambulation) | Fard — Shafiʿi/Hanbali | Sunnah — Hanafi | “Tawaf is Salah” — Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Book of Hajj (Kitab al-Hajj), Hadith 960, graded Hasan Sahih by al-Tirmidhi |
| Touching the Mushaf (Quran) | Fard — Majority | Khilaf — some scholars | “None shall touch it except the purified” — Quran 56:79 |
| Reciting Quran (without touching) | Recommended (not obligatory) | Scholarly consensus; best state for worship |
| Sajdah al-Tilawah (prostration of recitation) | Fard — Hanafi | Sunnah — Others | Ibn Qudamah, Al-Mughni |
