Wudu (Arabic: al-Wuduʾ) is the Islamic ritual purification of specific body parts using water — a mandatory prerequisite for Salah (prayer), Tawaf around the Ka‘bah, and touching the Quran. Performed multiple times every day, it is one of the most consequential acts of worship in a Muslim’s life.
In Islamic legal terminology (Fiqh al-Taharah), Wudu removes the state of Hadath Asghar (minor ritual impurity). It does not remove Hadath Akbar (major impurity requiring full Ghusl). The water used must be Maʼ Mutlaq (pure water). Wudu’s status in Fiqh is a Shart (condition) — Salah is completely invalid without it.
In This Wudu Guide
The Quranic Basis of Wudu — Quran 5:6
Wudu is obligated directly by Allah in the Quran — making it Fard ʾAyn (an individual obligation) for every Muslim before each Salah:
يَٰأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَمَنُوٓاْ إِذَا قُمْتُمْ إِلَى ٱلصَّلَوَٰةِ فَٱغْسِلُوْا وُجُوهَكُمْ وَأَيْدِيَكُمْ إِلَى ٱلْمَرَافِقِ وَٱمْسَحُوْا بِرُءُوسِكُمْ وَأَرْجُلَكُمْ إِلَى ٱلْكَعْبَيْنِ
“O you who believe! When you rise up for prayer, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, and wipe your heads and [wash] your feet up to the ankles.”
— Quran 5:6 (Al-Maʻidah)
This ayah establishes all four obligatory acts (Arkan al-Wudu): washing the face (Ghusl al-Wajh), washing the arms to elbows (Ghusl al-Yadayn), wiping the head (Mash al-Ras), and washing the feet (Ghusl al-Qadamayn). All four major madhabs agree on these four pillars.
The 4 Fard (Obligatory) Acts of Wudu
These are the Arkan (pillars) of Wudu. Omitting even one — intentionally or by mistake — renders the entire Wudu invalid:
| # | Act (Arabic Term) | Body Part | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ghusl al-Wajh — Wash the face | Hairline to chin, ear to ear | Quran 5:6 |
| 2 | Ghusl al-Yadayn — Wash both arms | Fingertips to and including elbows | Quran 5:6 |
| 3 | Mash al-Ras — Wipe the head | At least a portion (full head: Maliki/Hanbali) | Quran 5:6 |
| 4 | Ghusl al-Qadamayn — Wash both feet | Toes to and including ankles | Quran 5:6 |

Why Wudu Matters — Its Status in Islamic Law
- Condition (Shart) for Salah — The Prophet ﷺ said: “Allah does not accept the prayer of one who has nullified his Wudu until he performs Wudu again.” — Sahih Bukhari no. 135; Sahih Muslim no. 225
- Condition for Tawaf — “Tawaf around the House is like Salah, except that Allah has permitted speech during it.” — Sunan al-Tirmidhi no. 960; graded Sahih
- Condition for touching the Quran — “None should touch the Quran except one who is pure.” — Muwatta Imam Malik (majority position)
- Expiates sins — “His sins fall from his body — even from under his fingernails.” — Sahih Muslim no. 245
- Mark on Judgment Day — “My Ummah will be called al-Ghurr al-Muhajjalun from the traces of Wudu.” — Sahih Bukhari no. 136; Sahih Muslim no. 246

When Water Is Unavailable — Tayammum
When Maʼ Mutlaq (pure water) is genuinely unavailable — due to travel, illness, or scarcity — Islam substitutes Wudu with Tayammum (dry ablution using clean earth). This concession (Rukhsah) is commanded in the same ayah: Quran 5:6. Tayammum fully removes the state of Hadath Asghar and permits all acts requiring Wudu.
Dua After Wudu
Translation: “I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.”
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever performs Wudu well and then says this — the 8 gates of Paradise are opened for him.” — Sahih Muslim no. 234

Frequently Asked Questions About Wudu

Hanafi and Maliki: Flowing blood (dam sail) breaks Wudu. Shafiʻi and Hanbali: Blood does not break Wudu. → Full Hadith evidence and analysis
Does touching a woman break Wudu?
Shafiʻi: Any skin contact with a non-mahram woman breaks Wudu. Hanafi: Touch alone never breaks Wudu. Maliki and Hanbali: Touch with desire breaks it; without desire, it does not. → Full madhab comparison
How long does Wudu last?
Wudu has no time expiry — it remains valid until a Natiq (nullifier) occurs. A Muslim may pray Fajr with Wudu made the previous night, provided no nullifier occurred.
Does laughing break Wudu?
All four madhabs: Laughing outside of Salah does not break Wudu. Hanafi: Audible laughter during Salah breaks both the Salah and the Wudu. Maliki, Shafiʻi, Hanbali: Laughing during Salah breaks only the Salah, not the Wudu.
