The Nawaqid al-Wudu are acts or events that terminate the state of Hadath Asghar (minor ritual purity). When a nullifier occurs, a new Wudu is required before Salah, Tawaf, or touching the Quran. The four madhabs differ on several key nullifiers — and understanding these differences helps Muslims practise their madhab correctly.
Nullifier 1 — Anything Exiting the Private Parts (Unanimous)
Urine, stool, gas, pre-seminal fluid (madhi), prostatic fluid (wadi) — all break Wudu by unanimous agreement. “If any of you breaks wind, let him perform Wudu.” — Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Ablutions (Kitab al-Wudu’), Hadith 135, graded Sahih.
Key distinction: Madhi (pre-seminal fluid) breaks Wudu only. Mani (seminal fluid from orgasm) requires full Ghusl.
Nullifier 2 — Sleep (All Madhabs, Position Differs)
“The eye is the drawstring of the Wudu. Whoever sleeps, let him perform Wudu.” — Sunan Abi Dawud, Book of Purification (Kitab al-Taharah), Hadith 203, graded Hasan by al-Nawawi. Reasoning: sleep removes awareness of any gas passage.

Nullifier 3 — Flowing Blood (Disputed)
Hanafi and Maliki: Flowing blood (dam sail) breaks Wudu. Shafiʿi and Hanbali: Blood does not break Wudu — Jabir prayed while bleeding from a wound and the Prophet ﷺ approved (Sunan Abi Dawud, Book of Purification (Kitab al-Taharah), Hadith 198, graded Sahih by Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani). The Shafiʿi/Hanbali view holds that Quran 5:6 lists nullifiers exhaustively, and blood is not among them.
Nullifier 4 — Touching Non-Mahram (Disputed)
Shafiʿi: Any skin contact with a non-mahram opposite sex breaks Wudu — based on Quran 5:6 “laamastum al-nisa” (you touched women). Hanafi: Touch never breaks Wudu — “lams” means intercourse; the Prophet kissed wives before Salah without repeating Wudu (Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Book of Purification (Kitab al-Taharah), Hadith 86, graded Sahih by al-Albani and al-Tirmidhi). Maliki and Hanbali: Touch with desire (shahwah) breaks it; without desire, it does not.
Nullifier 5 — Vomiting a Mouthful (Disputed)
Hanafi: Vomiting a mouthful breaks Wudu — based on Sunan Ibn Majah, Book of Establishing Prayer (Kitab Iqamat al-Salah), Hadith 1221, graded Daʿif by the majority of hadith scholars including al-Albani and Ibn Hajar. Shafiʿi, Maliki, Hanbali: Vomiting does not break Wudu — the hadith evidence is weak and vomiting is absent from Quran 5:6’s list of nullifiers.
Nullifier 6 — Touching Private Parts (Disputed)
Maliki, Shafiʿi, Hanbali: Touching one’s private parts without barrier breaks Wudu — “Whoever touches his private part, let him perform Wudu.” — Sunan Abi Dawud, Book of Purification (Kitab al-Taharah), Hadith 181, graded Sahih by al-Albani and authenticated by Ibn Hajar. Hanafi: Does not break Wudu — the hadith interpreted as hygiene recommendation only; a second narration states “it is just a piece of your own flesh” (Sunan Abi Dawud, Book of Purification (Kitab al-Taharah), Hadith 182, graded Daʿif by the majority of hadith scholars).
Nullifier 7 — Eating Camel Meat (Hanbali Only)
Hanbali only: Eating camel meat breaks Wudu — “Perform Wudu after eating camel meat.” — Sahih Muslim, Book of Purification (Kitab al-Taharah), Hadith 360, graded Sahih. Ibn Hanbal said: “There are two sahih hadiths I consider strongest on this.” Hanafi, Maliki, Shafiʿi: Does not break Wudu — the hadith is a hygiene recommendation. One of the most famous isolated Hanbali positions in Wudu fiqh.
Nullifier 8 — Loss of Consciousness (Unanimous)
Fainting (ighmaʿ), intoxication (sukr), or madness (junun) break Wudu by unanimous agreement. Same reasoning as sleep: loss of consciousness eliminates awareness of gas passage.
