STEP-BY-STEP — BASED ON SAHIH BUKHARI 159
How to Perform Wudu
The Prophet ﷺ said: “There is no prayer accepted from one who is not in a state of purity.” — Sahih Muslim, Book of Purification (Kitab al-Taharah), Hadith 224, graded Sahih
The complete Wudu combines the 4 obligatory acts (Arkan) from Quran 5:6 with the 8 Sunnah acts the Prophet ﷺ consistently practised. The most reliable single narration is the Uthman ibn Affan narration in Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Ablutions (Kitab al-Wudu’), Hadith 159, graded Sahih and Sahih Muslim, Book of Purification (Kitab al-Taharah), Hadith 226, graded Sahih, in which Uthman demonstrated the complete Wudu of the Prophet ﷺ to his companions.
The Complete Wudu — All 11 Steps

7 Common Mistakes That Invalidate Wudu
- Not washing the elbows — the elbow must be included (unanimous)
- Not washing the ankles — the ankle bone must be included (unanimous)
- Leaving a dry patch — any dry area on an obligatory limb invalidates that act
- Thick beard not penetrated — Hanafi/Hanbali require water to reach the skin beneath
- Wrong sequence — invalid in Shafiʿi and Hanbali (Tartib is Fard)
- Long pause between limbs — invalid in Maliki if limbs dry before completing (Muwalat is Fard)
- Washing more than 3 times — Makruh; rebuked by the Prophet ﷺ (Sunan Ibn Majah, Book of Purification (Kitab al-Taharah), Hadith 422, graded Sahih by al-Albani)
