How to Make Wudu — Complete Step-by-Step Guide (with Conditions, 4 Madhabs)

This guide covers Wudu completely: the theological WHY, what water is valid, the Quranic command word-by-word, the 4 Fard acts, the complete 11-step method with madhab notes, Mas’h al-Khuffayn, the full Dua after Wudu in Arabic, and the most common invalidating mistakes.

Why Was Wudu Prescribed? — The Theological Foundation

Wudu (وُضُوء) from the root و-ض-أ (w-d-‘) — brightness, clarity, luminosity. The same root gives wadu (radiance). Wudu is not merely physical washing — it is the act of entering a state of Taharah (ritual purity) required to stand before Allah in Salah.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Allah does not accept Salah without purification, nor charity from money gained through betrayal.” — Muslim 224 (Sahih)

And: “The key to Salah is purification (Taharah); its opening is Takbir; its closing is Tasleem.” — Abu Dawud 618, Tirmidhi 238 (Sahih)

Wudu is the key — without it, the door to Salah is locked. But beyond its legal necessity, the Prophet ﷺ revealed its spiritual dimension: “When a Muslim washes his face in Wudu, every sin his eyes committed exits with the water. When he washes his hands, every sin his hands committed exits. When he washes his feet, every sin his feet walked toward exits — until he emerges purified of sins.” — Muslim 244 (Sahih)

The Prophet ﷺ further said: “My Ummah will be called on the Day of Resurrection with white radiance on their faces, hands, and feet from the traces of Wudu.” — Bukhari 136, Muslim 246. The Arabic word used is Ghurrah (غُرَّة) — the white blaze on a horse’s forehead. Wudu leaves a light that is visible on the Day of Judgment.

The Quranic Command — Quran 5:6 Word-by-Word

“O you who believe! When you rise to perform prayer, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, and wipe your heads and wash your feet up to the ankles.” — Quran 5:6

Arabic Word Meaning Act Fiqh Implication
فَٱغْسِلُوا۟ وُجُوهَكُمْ Wash your faces FARD 1 Ighsilu = wash thoroughly with flowing water. Wiping alone is insufficient for the face.
وَأَيْدِيَكُمْ إِلَى ٱلْمَرَافِقِ Your hands up to the elbows FARD 2 Ila al-marafiq = “up to and including the elbows” — the elbows themselves must be washed.
وَٱمْسَحُوا۟ بِرُءُوسِكُمْ Wipe your heads FARD 3 Imsahu = wipe (not wash). The letter ba (ب) before ru’usikum is key to the madhab difference on how much of the head to wipe.
وَأَرْجُلَكُمْ إِلَى ٱلْكَعْبَيْنِ Your feet up to the ankles FARD 4 Ankles must be included. Reading as arjulakum (wash) vs. arjulikum (wipe) — the majority reading requires washing, not just wiping the feet.

What Water Is Valid for Wudu?

Not all water can be used for Wudu. Islamic Fiqh classifies water into categories:

Valid for Wudu (Tahur)

  • Rainwater, river, sea, well, spring water
  • Tap water (treated municipal water)
  • Seawater — “Its water is pure (Tahur)” — Abu Dawud 83
  • Snow and hail water (after melting)
  • Water changed slightly by permissible things (leaves, earth) — if still predominantly water

NOT Valid for Wudu

  • Water that has changed in colour, smell, or taste from Najasah (impurity)
  • Fruit juices, milk, vinegar — not “water”
  • Water already used in Wudu (Musta’mal) — Hanafi: cannot reuse; Shafi’i/Hanbali: cannot reuse for the same act
  • Very small still body of water containing Najasah (Hanafi: less than 10×10 cubits)

The 4 Fard Acts of Wudu — From Quran 5:6

Wash the Face

From hairline to chin, ear to ear. Once = Fard. Three times = Sunnah. Must reach under eyebrows.

Wash Hands to Elbows

Right then left, elbows included. Once = Fard. Three times = Sunnah.

Wipe the Head

Wet hands, front to back. ONCE only — wiping, not washing. Madhab difference on how much.

Wash Feet to Ankles

Right then left, ankles included, between toes. Once = Fard. Three times = Sunnah.

Madhab Differences on the Fard Acts

Act Hanafi Maliki Shafi’i Hanbali
Niyyah (Intention) Sunnah Fard Fard Fard
Mouth + nose rinsing Fard Sunnah Sunnah Sunnah
Head wiping — how much? ¼ of head Entire head Any part Entire head
Order (Tartib) Sunnah Sunnah Fard Fard
Continuity (Muwalah) Sunnah Fard Sunnah Fard
Beard — reaching skin beneath Fard (thick beard: sunnah) Wipe over Fard (thick beard: Sunnah) Wipe over

The Complete 11-Step Method

  1. 1

Niyyah (Intention) — In the heart: “I intend Wudu for purification.” No verbal utterance needed. [Fard: Shafi’i/Hanbali | Sunnah: Hanafi/Maliki]
  2. 2

Bismillah — “There is no Wudu for one who does not mention Allah’s name.” — Abu Dawud 101 (Hasan). [Sunnah Mu’akkadah]
  3. 3

Wash both hands to wrists — 3 times, rubbing between fingers. Miswak here if available. [Sunnah]
  4. 4

Rinse mouth (Madmadah) — Take water in right hand, swirl in mouth vigorously, spit with left side. 3 times. [Fard: Hanafi | Sunnah: others]
  5. 5

Rinse nose (Istinshaaq + Istinthar) — Sniff water in with right hand, blow out with left. 3 times. Sniff firmly except during fasting. [Fard: Hanafi | Sunnah: others]
  6. 6

Wash the FACE — 3 times — Hairline to chin, ear to ear. Thick beard: pass wet fingers through. Thin beard: wash skin beneath. [FARD — Quran 5:6]
  7. 7

Wash RIGHT arm to elbow — 3 times, then LEFT arm — Include the elbow itself. Rub between fingers each time. [FARD — Quran 5:6]
  8. 8

Wipe the HEAD — ONCE — New water on hands, wipe front to back then back to front. This is ONE wipe. Do NOT wash the head three times — that is an error. [FARD — Quran 5:6]
  9. 9

Wipe the EARS — once — Index fingers inside the ear canal, thumbs wipe the outer ear. Use the water remaining from Step 8. [Sunnah]
  10. 10

Wash RIGHT foot to ankle — 3 times, then LEFT foot — Include the ankle. Use little finger to rub between each toe from little toe inward. This step causes the most common invalidating mistakes. [FARD — Quran 5:6]
  11. 11

Recite the Dua after Wudu — Facing the Qibla, recite the Shahada Dua (below). [Sunnah — highly recommended]

The Dua After Wudu — Full Arabic Text

Allahummaj’alni min al-tawwabeen waj’alni min al-mutatahhireen.

“I bear witness that there is no god except Allah alone, with no partner. And I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger. O Allah, make me among those who repent and make me among those who purify themselves.”

Hadith evidence: “Whoever performs Wudu and recites: Ashhadu alla ilaha illallah… — the eight gates of Paradise are opened for him, he may enter from whichever he wishes.” — Muslim 234 (Sahih). Some narrations add a Surah Al-Qadr recitation after the Shahada dua — narrated by Tirmidhi but its chain is disputed; the Shahada dua alone is established by Sahih Hadith.

Mas’h al-Khuffayn — Wiping Over Socks Instead of Washing Feet

One of the most frequently missed Prophetic Sunnahs: wiping over leather socks (Khuffayn — خُفَّيْن) or thick socks during Wudu instead of washing the feet. This is a confirmed Sunnah with over 40 Companions narrating it — making it among the most mutawatir (mass-transmitted) Sunnahs.

Conditions for Mas’h al-Khuffayn:

  • The socks must have been put on while in a state of valid Wudu — after washing the feet
  • Resident: Valid for 24 hours from the first Mas’h (not from when socks were put on)
  • Traveler (Musafir): Valid for 72 hours (3 days and nights)
  • Method: wipe the TOP of the socks with wet fingers — do not wipe the sole
  • Right foot first, left foot second — once each
  • Invalidated when: time expires, socks are removed, Hadath Akbar occurs (Ghusl required)

Contemporary socks: The Shafi’i madhab traditionally restricts Mas’h to leather Khuffs. Hanafi, Maliki, and Hanbali — and many contemporary Shafi’i scholars — permit Mas’h over thick fabric socks (Jawrab) if they cover the foot to the ankle and stay up without tying. This is the view of Ibn Taymiyyah and many contemporary scholars including those of the Permanent Committee (Saudi Arabia).

What Requires Wudu vs. What Does Not

Requires Valid Wudu

  • All 5 daily Salah and any Nafl prayer
  • Tawaf around the Kaaba
  • Physically touching the Mushaf (Quran)
  • Sujood al-Tilawah (prostration of recitation)
  • Sujood al-Shukr (prostration of gratitude) — per Shafi’i/Hanbali

Does NOT Require Wudu

  • Reciting Quran from memory
  • Dhikr, Tasbeeh, Dua in any form
  • Listening to the Quran
  • Reading Quran on phone/screen (majority contemporary view)
  • Entering a mosque (Wudu is Sunnah, not Fard for entry)

Does Ghusl Replace Wudu?

Majority (Maliki, Shafi’i, Hanbali): A complete Ghusl with correct Niyyah encompasses Wudu within it. After a complete Ghusl, you may pray without making a separate Wudu — the Ghusl includes it.

Hanafi madhab: Ghusl purifies from Hadath Akbar. A separate Wudu is Mustahabb (recommended) for highest Salah validity, especially if private parts were touched during Ghusl. Practically: after Ghusl in the Hanafi madhab, making Wudu before Salah is the preferred approach even though Ghusl is sufficient.

Tajdid al-Wudu — Renewing Valid Wudu

If your Wudu is still valid (no nullifier has occurred), renewing it before each Salah is a recommended Sunnah — not an obligation. The Prophet ﷺ sometimes prayed all 5 prayers with a single Wudu (Muslim 277) and sometimes renewed Wudu for each prayer. Both are authentic Prophetic practices.

Renewal with Wudu already intact: Valid and rewarded. The renewed Wudu replaces the first. If you had no nullifier between the two Wudus: some scholars hold only one of them carries the specific spiritual reward (the hadith about sins exiting with water) since there were no sins to “exit.” Others hold both are fully rewarded Ibadah regardless.

Most Common Mistakes That Invalidate Wudu

  • Washing the head THREE times — The head is wiped ONCE, not washed three times. This wastes water, is disliked, and does not add validity.
  • Not including the elbows or ankles — “Up to the elbows” and “up to the ankles” in Quran 5:6 means including those joints. The Prophet ﷺ warned: “Woe to the heels from the Fire!” — Bukhari 60 — referring to heels left dry in Wudu.
  • Not reaching between the toes — Water must reach between each toe. Use the little finger to clean between each toe, starting from the little toe of the right foot.
  • Regular nail polish on hands or feet — Forms a waterproof barrier. Wudu is invalid with nail polish — water cannot reach the nail surface which is part of the Fard area.
  • Not including the nose and mouth — Per Hanafi madhab (the most followed globally), mouth and nose rinsing are Fard. Per others, they are Sunnah — but skipping them even as Sunnah is a significant omission.
  • Wasting excessive water — The Prophet ﷺ made Wudu with approximately one Mudd (~750ml). Excessive water is wasteful and Makruh even in Wudu. The Sunnah is 3 times maximum for each act — washing more than 3 times is disliked.
  • Breaking order (Tartib) — Shafi’i and Hanbali — If you wash the arms before the face, the Wudu is invalid per Shafi’i and Hanbali madhabs. Always follow the Quranic sequence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Wudu need to be repeated before every Salah?

No — Wudu remains valid until a nullifier occurs. The Prophet ﷺ sometimes prayed multiple prayers with a single Wudu (Muslim 277). Renewing Wudu before each Salah is a recommended Sunnah, not an obligation. See the full list of what breaks Wudu.

Can Wudu be made with seawater or tap water?

Yes — seawater is valid: “Its water is pure (Tahur)” — Abu Dawud 83 (Sahih). Tap water, well water, rainwater — all valid as long as the water has not been changed in colour, smell, or taste by impurity.

Does Ghusl replace Wudu?

Yes — per Maliki, Shafi’i, and Hanbali, a complete Ghusl with Niyyah encompasses Wudu. Hanafi: recommends a separate Wudu after Ghusl for highest validity, though the Ghusl is sufficient.

Can I make Wudu while wearing nail polish?

No — regular nail polish is a waterproof barrier preventing water from reaching the nail surface (part of the Fard Wudu area). Wudu with nail polish is invalid. Henna (Mehndi) colours without forming a barrier and is valid.

Is the Miswak Sunnah before Wudu?

Yes — confirmed Sunnah Mu’akkadah before Wudu and before Salah (Bukhari 887, Muslim 252). A toothbrush serves the cleaning purpose, though using Miswak specifically is the Sunnah.
