Tayammum — Dry Ablution in Islam
فَلَمْ تَجِدُوا مَآءً فَتَيَمَّمُوا صَعِيدًا طَيِّبًا فَامْسَحُوا بِوُجُوهِكُمْ وَأَيْدِيكُمْ
“…and you find no water, then perform Tayammum with clean earth and wipe over your faces and hands.” — Quran 5:6
Tayammum is the Islamic ritual of dry ablution using clean earth (Saʼid Tahir) substituting water Wudu or Ghusl. It is a Rukhsah (divine concession) — a full legal replacement removing Hadath Asghar (minor impurity) and Hadath Akbar (major impurity). All acts of worship become valid until a nullifier occurs or water becomes available.
When Is Tayammum Permitted? — The 4 Conditions
Condition 1
Water Is Absent
No water within reasonable search distance. Hanafi: ~1 mile. Maliki: within distance that would delay prayer past its time.
Condition 2
Using Water Causes Harm
Illness, injury, or condition where water worsens the situation. Includes extreme cold (Bard Shadid) with no means of heating.
Condition 3
Danger in Reaching Water
Water is present but reaching it poses genuine risk — enemy, wild animal, or dangerous terrain.
Condition 4
Water Needed for Essential Use
Water is present but required for drinking or cooking. Human needs take precedence over ritual purity.

How to Perform Tayammum — Step by Step
‘Ammar ibn Yasir narrated: “The Prophet ﷺ wiped his face and both his hands with a single light strike on the earth.” — Sahih Muslim, Book of Purification (Kitab al-Taharah), Hadith 368, graded Sahih
- Make Niyyah — specify replacing Wudu (Hadath Asghar) or Ghusl (Hadath Akbar)
- Say Bismillah
- First strike (Darb al-Awwal): Press both palms lightly on the Saʼid Tahir to gather dust
- Wipe the face: Full face once — hairline to chin, ear to ear
- Second strike (Darb al-Thani): Press both palms on the earth again
- Wipe right arm: Left palm from right fingertips to the right elbow
- Wipe left arm: Right palm from left fingertips to the left elbow
- Recite the Dua after Wudu
What Breaks Tayammum
- All nullifiers of Wudu equally nullify Tayammum
- Water becoming available: Shafiʿi/Hanbali: void immediately; Hanafi/Maliki: not during prayer. Completed prayers need not be repeated — unanimous agreement.
- For Tayammum replacing Ghusl: additionally broken by Janabah nullifiers

Tayammum replaces Ghusl (ritual bath required after Janabah — sexual relations, menstruation, postnatal bleeding) when the same 4 conditions apply. Same two-strike method. Can you use Tayammum instead of Wudu at home?
