Dua for Marriage and Finding a Spouse
Three Quranic and Prophetic duas for finding a pious spouse — with full Arabic text, word-by-word meaning, and the Quranic law that determines who receives the spouse they pray for.
Rabbana hab lana min azwajina wa dhurriyyatina qurrata a’yunin waj’alna lil-muttaqina imama — Quran 25:74
The Islamic Understanding of Marriage
Allah describes marriage in Quran 30:21 with three precise attributes: Sukun (سُكُون — tranquility), Mawaddah (مَوَدَّة — affection), and Rahmah (رَحْمَة — mercy). These are not emotions that happen accidentally — they are spiritual qualities that grow when two people build their marriage on the foundation of taqwa.
The same Quran calls marriage a Mithaq Ghalizha (مِيثَاقٌ غَلِيظ) — a solemn, weighty covenant (4:21). This is the same term used for Allah’s covenant with the Prophets. It signals that marriage in Islam is among the most serious contracts a human can enter.
The Three Pillars of Islamic Marriage
Mawaddah
Deep affection — root و-د-د (waw-dal-dal), same as Al-Wadud. Love that is warm and active.
Rahmah
Mercy — root ر-ح-م. Same root as womb (rahim). Compassion through difficulty.
Sukun
Tranquility — root س-ك-ن. Same root as “sakin” (dwelling). Inner stillness in each other’s presence.
Dua 1 — Rabbana Hab Lana (Quran 25:74)
This is the primary Dua for marriage — one of the 40 Rabbana Duas in the Quran, spoken by the servants of Al-Rahman (عِبَادُ الرَّحْمَٰن) — those who are praised in Surah Al-Furqan for their character: humble, gentle, forgiving, and worshipping through the night.
Rabbana hab lana min azwajina wa dhurriyyatina qurrata a’yunin waj’alna lil-muttaqina imama
“Our Lord, grant us from among our spouses and offspring comfort to our eyes, and make us a leading example for the righteous.”
Word-by-Word Meaning
| Arabic | Transliteration | Meaning | Linguistic Depth |
|---|---|---|---|
| رَبَّنَا | Rabbana | Our Lord | Root ر-ب-ب — to nurture, sustain. Choosing Rabb (not Allah or Rahman) emphasizes the relationship of the carer with the cared-for. |
| هَبْ لَنَا | hab lana | Grant us (as a gift) | Hab from root و-ه-ب = to gift freely, without compensation. Not earned — purely given. This is why the dua works: we ask for a gift (hiba), not a reward. |
| مِنْ أَزْوَاجِنَا | min azwajina | From among our spouses | Azwaj (أَزْوَاج) — plural of zawj (spouse). The word zawj means the matched pair — each spouse is the other’s zawj. The min (from) suggests: from within the marriage relationship itself. |
| وَذُرِّيَّاتِنَا | wa dhurriyyatina | And our offspring/progeny | Dhurriyyah — descendants. The dua covers both spouse and children — the complete family unit. |
| قُرَّةَ أَعْيُنٍ | qurrata a’yunin | Comfort/delight to our eyes | Literally “coolness of eyes.” In Arabic, tears of grief are hot; tears of deep joy are cool. Qurrata a’yun = a source of joy so deep it cools your eyes with tears of gratitude. |
| وَاجْعَلْنَا لِلْمُتَّقِينَ إِمَامًا | waj’alna lil-muttaqina imama | Make us a leading example for the righteous | The dua doesn’t stop at personal happiness — it asks that the family become a model for others in righteousness. Marriage with a God-driven purpose. |
Critical Insight: This dua is not just for finding a spouse — it is a dua for a righteous, joy-giving marriage. The servants of Al-Rahman who recite it (Quran 25:63-74) are already described as those who pray through the night, spend moderately, do not commit shirk, and forgive. They are asking from a position of spiritual worthiness. The dua implicitly asks you to become its answer.
Dua 2 — Prophet Musa’s ﷺ Dua (Quran 28:24)
Rabbi inni lima anzalta ilayya min khayrin faqeer
“My Lord, I am in desperate need of whatever good You send down to me.”
Prophet Musa ﷺ said this alone in a foreign land — exhausted, without food, shelter, family, or prospect. He named no specific need. Within moments of this dua, a woman approached him, led him to her father’s home, and eventually he received employment, shelter, and Safura as his wife. This dua teaches: surrender the form of the answer to Allah. You need a spouse — Allah decides who, when, and how. See the full guide to Rabbi Inni Lima Anzalta.
Dua 3 — The Prophetic Wedding Blessing (Abu Dawud 2130, Sahih)
Baraka Allahu laka wa baraka ‘alayk wa jama’a baynakuma fi khayr
“May Allah bless you and shower blessings upon you, and may He unite you both in goodness.”
Abu Dawud 2130, Tirmidhi 1091 — Grading: Sahih
The Prophet ﷺ taught this specifically to say when congratulating a newly married couple. Note the distinction: baraka laka (for you) and baraka ‘alayk (upon you) — two different forms of barakah. One is for your benefit; one is upon your person. Together they cover the complete circle of divine blessing in marriage.
The Quranic Law of Marriage — Becoming Who You Pray For
Allah says in Quran 24:26:
ٱلْخَبِيثَٰتُ لِلْخَبِيثِينَ وَٱلْخَبِيثُونَ لِلْخَبِيثَٰتِ ۖ وَٱلطَّيِّبَٰتُ لِلطَّيِّبِينَ وَٱلطَّيِّبُونَ لِلطَّيِّبَٰتِ
“Impure women are for impure men, and impure men for impure women. Pure women are for pure men, and pure men for pure women.”
Ibn al-Qayyim explains this is a law of character correspondence — like attracts like in the realm of the soul. If you want a pious, righteous spouse, the most direct path is to become that person yourself. The dua and the self-purification must go together. Making Dua for a pious spouse while neglecting your own prayer is asking Allah to give you something your character has not prepared to receive.
When to Recite Dua for Marriage
- After Fajr prayer daily — make it the first personal dua of each day. Consistency (dawam) matters more than quantity.
- In Sujood during Tahajjud — the closest a servant is to Allah (Muslim 482). Pour your heart out here. See best times to make Dua.
- Last hour of Friday before Maghrib — the guaranteed acceptance window (Bukhari 935). Make this a weekly appointment.
- On Laylatul Qadr — the most powerful night of the year. A dua for marriage on Laylatul Qadr is worth 83+ years of asking. See Dua for Laylatul Qadr.
- Consistently — never give up — “Be not impatient in Dua. None of you should say: I made Dua but it was not answered” (Bukhari 6340). Impatience cuts the Dua.
The Three-Part Framework: Dua + Tazkiyyah + Asbab
Dua
Make consistent supplication at authenticated times. Ask specifically, with certainty, after Salawat.
Tazkiyyah
Purify yourself. Pray regularly, lower your gaze, make Istighfar. Quran 24:26 — become who you pray for.
Asbab
Take practical means: inform family, use matrimonial platforms, ask the Imam, ask community elders. Dua without Asbab is incomplete.
Common Mistakes
- Making Dua without taking practical steps — Dua and Asbab must go together
- Over-specifying criteria — listing height, income, nationality in the Dua. Ask for piety, compatibility, and love — let Allah choose the form
- Giving up after a few months — some of the greatest duas in the Quran were made for decades (Prophet Zakariyya ﷺ prayed for a child into old age)
- Not working on self-purification — Quran 24:26 is a divine law, not a suggestion
- Reciting the dua mechanically without understanding its meaning — learn the word-by-word meaning above
Perform Istikhara When You Find a Match
Once you identify a potential spouse and have taken time to learn about their character, deen, and suitability, perform Salat al-Istikhara. It is 2 rakaat followed by the Istikhara dua — surrendering the final decision to Allah’s wisdom while you continue pursuing the matter with sincerity.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best dua for getting married soon?
Quran 25:74 — Rabbana hab lana min azwajina wa dhurriyyatina qurrata a’yunin. Recite it consistently after Fajr, in Tahajjud Sujood, on Fridays, and on Laylatul Qadr. Pair it with self-improvement (Tazkiyyah) and practical steps (Asbab).
What does Qurrata A’yun mean?
Literally “coolness of eyes” — in Arabic emotional language, tears of grief are hot and tears of deep joy are cool. Qurrata a’yun describes a source of joy so profound it cools your eyes. It means: a spouse whose presence brings you deep, heart-settling peace and gratitude.
Should I make Istikhara for marriage?
Yes — after identifying a potential match and learning about them. Istikhara is 2 rakaat Nafl followed by the authenticated dua. It is not a dream ritual — it is surrendering the decision to Allah while continuing to take practical steps. See the complete Istikhara guide.
How many times should I recite the marriage dua?
No prescribed number — consistency matters more than quantity. The Sunnah of repeating requests 3 times (Bukhari 240) is a good practice per session. Most importantly: recite daily with full understanding and present heart.
What Surah is recommended for delayed marriage?
Scholars recommend: Surah Al-Furqan 25:74 (Rabbana Hab Lana), Surah Maryam (Allah grants what seems impossible), consistent Istighfar (sins delay blessings), and authentic Dua for rizq (barakah in all areas of life, including marriage timing).
