Durood Ibrahim — Arabic, Transliteration, Meaning & Ruling in Salah

Durood Ibrahim is the most authentic and widely accepted form of Salawat (sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ). Unlike many other duroods whose authenticity is debated, Durood Ibrahim comes directly from the Companions asking the Prophet ﷺ himself how to send blessings upon him — and this is his answer.

It is recited in every prayer, in the final sitting (Qa’dah), after the Tashahhud. Most Islamic scholars consider it obligatory (wajib) in salah.

Hadith Source and Authenticity

Durood Ibrahim is Sahih (authentic) — reported in the two most reliable hadith collections in Islam.

Ka’b ibn ‘Ujrah (رضي الله عنه) narrated: The Companions said, “O Messenger of Allah, we already know how to give salam to you, but how should we send prayers upon you?” The Prophet ﷺ replied: “Say: Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammad…”

  • Sahih al-Bukhari — Hadith 3370
  • Sahih Muslim — Hadith 406
  • Sunan Abu Dawud — Hadith 976
  • Jami at-Tirmidhi — Hadith 483
  • Sunan an-Nasa’i — Hadith 1289

This is the only Durood whose exact wording was directly taught by the Prophet ﷺ in response to a direct question. This is what distinguishes it from all other forms of salawat.

Is Durood Ibrahim Obligatory in Salah?

Scholars differ on whether Durood Ibrahim is wajib (obligatory) or sunnah in prayer. Here is the ruling from each madhab:

MadhabRuling on Durood Ibrahim in Salah
Shafi’iWajib (obligatory) — prayer is invalid without it
HanbaliWajib (obligatory) — prayer is invalid without it
HanafiSunnah mu’akkadah (confirmed sunnah) — strongly recommended
MalikiSunnah — recommended but not obligatory

When Should You Recite Durood Ibrahim?

  • In Salah: After the Tashahhud, in the final sitting (Qa’dah) of every prayer
  • Friday (Jumu’ah): The Prophet ﷺ said: “Send abundant blessings upon me on Fridays” — Durood Ibrahim is ideal for this
  • After Adhan: It is sunnah to recite Durood after hearing the call to prayer
  • When making dua: Begin and end your supplications with Durood Ibrahim for acceptance
  • At any time: Sending salawat earns 10 blessings from Allah for every single recitation (Sahih Muslim)

What Is the Meaning of “Salli” vs “Barik”?

Durood Ibrahim contains two distinct requests to Allah:

  • Salli (صَلِّ): Asking Allah to raise the rank and mention of the Prophet ﷺ. Ibn al-Qayyim explained this as Allah praising the Prophet ﷺ among the highest angels.
  • Barik (بَارِكْ): Asking for continuous, permanent blessings that increase and never decrease — the root word “barakah” implies something that grows and stays.

Virtues and Benefits of Durood Ibrahim

  • Allah sends 10 blessings upon the person who recites it once (Sahih Muslim 384)
  • It is the form of salawat the Prophet ﷺ himself approved — making it the most assured way to send blessings
  • It is accepted by all four madhabs as valid in salah — no scholarly disagreement on its authenticity
  • Reciting it on Fridays is especially rewarded: “Whoever sends 80 Duroods upon me on Friday, 80 years of sins are forgiven” (Abu Dawud — graded Hasan)
  • It is a means of having duas accepted: The Prophet ﷺ said every dua is veiled until salawat is sent (Tirmidhi)

Is Ibrahim in Durood the Same as Prophet Ibrahim (AS)?

Yes. Durood Ibrahim asks Allah to bless Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his family in the same way Allah blessed Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and his family. Scholars note that this comparison was chosen because the family of Ibrahim (AS) — the Prophets descended from him — received an unmatched and universal blessing in human history. The dua is asking for the same level of honour for the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his family.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I recite Durood Ibrahim outside of salah?

Yes. It is the most authentic form of salawat and can be recited at any time — during dhikr, after dua, on Fridays, or simply throughout the day.

Is Durood Ibrahim the same as Durood Ibrahimi?

Yes, “Durood Ibrahim” and “Durood Ibrahimi” refer to the same supplication. The name simply reflects that it mentions Ibrahim (AS) as the point of comparison for the blessings requested.

Which Durood should I recite in salah?

Durood Ibrahim is the most authentic and the one endorsed by all four madhabs. It comes directly from the Prophet ﷺ teaching his companions how to send blessings on him, making it the safest and most rewarding choice in and outside of salah.

How many times should I recite Durood Ibrahim?

In salah it is recited once in the final sitting. Outside of salah, there is no fixed number — scholars encourage abundant recitation, especially 10 times in the morning and evening, and 80 times on Fridays based on the narration in Abu Dawud.
