The Source Entity — As-Salam in the Quran
Quran 59:23 — As-Salam listed in the chain of Names:
هُوَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِى لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ٱلْمَلِكُ ٱلْقُدُّوسُ ٱلسَّلَٰمُ ٱلْمُؤْمِنُ
“He is Allah — there is no god but He — Al-Malik, Al-Quddus, As-Salam, Al-Mu’min…”
Quran 10:25 — Paradise named after As-Salam:
وَٱللَّهُ يَدْعُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰ دَارِ ٱلسَّلَٰمِ وَيَهْدِى مَن يَشَآءُ إِلَىٰ صِرَٰطٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ
“And Allah invites to Dar as-Salam (Abode of Peace) — and guides whom He wills to a straight path.”
As-Salam appears in Quran 59:23 between Al-Quddus and Al-Mu’min — a deliberate sequence. Ibn al-Qayyim noted: Allah is first declared absolutely pure (Al-Quddus), then recognised as the Source of all peace and safety (As-Salam), then the Giver of security (Al-Mu’min). The progression moves from His intrinsic purity to His outward gifts to creation.
Arabic Root Analysis — س-ل-م
No root in the Arabic language generates more important Islamic vocabulary than س-ل-م (s-l-m). Every word a Muslim uses most frequently comes from this single root:

The Morphological Key — As-Salam Means SOURCE of Peace, Not The Peaceful
The pattern فَعَال (fa’āl) in Arabic indicates the source or origin of something — not merely one who possesses it. Compare:
- Jawwad (جَوَّاد) = not merely generous, but the source of generosity — generosity flows from him
- Mannān (مَنَّان) = not merely a giver of blessings, but the source of all blessings
- As-Salam (السَّلَام) = not merely peaceful, but the source of all peace — all salam in creation flows from Him
This is the critical distinction most translations miss. Allah does not need peace the way a troubled human needs peace. Rather: all peace, all safety, all soundness in the universe — in relationships, in hearts, in societies, in nature — originates from As-Salam. When peace is absent in the world, it is because creation has turned away from its Source.
Dar as-Salam — Paradise Named After This Name
Allah named Paradise Dar as-Salam — the Abode of As-Salam. This is the only place in existence where As-Salam’s peace is fully and permanently manifest:
The Salam Greeting — Spreading a Name of Allah
The Prophet ﷺ said: “You will not enter Paradise until you believe, and you will not believe until you love one another. Shall I not guide you to something that if you do it you will love one another? Spread Salam among you.” — Muslim 54 (Sahih)
Ibn al-Qayyim’s insight: the Salam greeting is not merely a social courtesy — it is a theological statement. When you say “Assalamu alaykum,” you are:
- Invoking As-Salam — placing the person under the protection of Allah’s Name
- Declaring your peaceful intentions — you come with no harm
- Spreading a Name of Allah in the world — an act of dhikr
- Connecting people to the Source of all peace — pointing them toward As-Salam
The full greeting — Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh — contains three divine gifts: Salam (peace/safety), Rahma (mercy), and Barakah (blessing). The Prophet ﷺ said each addition multiplies the reward: Salam = 10 rewards, + wa rahmatullah = 20, + wa barakatuh = 30. — Abu Dawud 5195 (Sahih).
The Salam on the Prophets — Quran 37
Surah As-Saffat (37) closes the story of each prophet with a divine Salam, directly from As-Salam:
- Quran 37:79 — “Salamun ala Nuh fil-‘alameen” — Peace upon Nuh among all the worlds
- Quran 37:109 — “Salamun ala Ibrahim” — Peace upon Ibrahim
- Quran 37:120 — “Salamun ala Musa wa Harun” — Peace upon Musa and Harun
- Quran 37:130 — “Salamun ala Il-Yasin” — Peace upon Ilyas
- Quran 37:181 — “Salamun alal-mursaleen” — Peace upon all the Messengers
The repetition of divine Salam on each prophet is Allah (As-Salam) personally extending His peace to His chosen servants across history. Every believer who sends Salam on the Prophet ﷺ in Salawat is joining this divine tradition.
The Post-Salah Dhikr of As-Salam
Muslim 591 (Sahih) — After every Fard Salah:
اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ السَّلَامُ وَمِنْكَ السَّلَامُ تَبَارَكْتَ يَا ذَا الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ
“Allahumma anta as-Salam wa minka as-Salam, tabarakta ya dhal-jalali wal-ikram.”
“O Allah, You are As-Salam and from You comes Salam. Blessed are You, O Possessor of Majesty and Honour.”
When: Immediately after Tasleem (the final Salam of Salah) — before moving or turning completely. This dhikr is Sunnah Mu’akkadah after every Fard prayer. Thawban RA narrated it directly from the Prophet ﷺ.
How to Make Dua with As-Salam
- “Ya Salam, sallimni” — O Source of Peace, grant me safety/peace. For protection from harm, fear, anxiety, danger.
- “Ya Salam, sallim qalbi” — O Source of Peace, give my heart salam. For inner peace, removal of anxiety, tranquility during trials.
- Before entering the home — “Allahumma inni as’aluka khayral-mawlaj wa khayral-makhrij, bismillahi walajna wa bismillahi kharajna wa ala Rabbina tawakkalna.” — Invoking As-Salam’s protection over your home — Abu Dawud 5096 (Sahih).
- When afraid or in distress — Saying “Assalamu alaykum” to those around you is Sunnah — entering a gathering with As-Salam’s Name is protective. The Prophet ﷺ himself greeted with Salam in moments of arrival and departure.
