The Source Entity — Al-Mu’min in the Quran
Quran 59:23 — Al-Mu’min in the sequence of divine Names:
هُوَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِى لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ٱلْمَلِكُ ٱلْقُدُّوسُ ٱلسَّلَٰمُ ٱلْمُؤْمِنُ ٱلْمُهَيْمِنُ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْجَبَّارُ ٱلْمُتَكَبِّرُ
“He is Allah — there is no god but He — Al-Malik, Al-Quddus, As-Salam, Al-Mu’min, Al-Muhaymin, Al-Aziz, Al-Jabbar, Al-Mutakabbir.”
Al-Mu’min appears between As-Salam and Al-Muhaymin in this sequence. As-Salam is the Source of Peace; Al-Mu’min is the Giver of Security; Al-Muhaymin is the Watchful Guardian. Together they describe a divine protection that is complete: Allah brings peace (As-Salam), grants security (Al-Mu’min), and watches over all (Al-Muhaymin). No threat can reach the one under all three.
The Critical Correction — Al-Mu’min Does NOT Mean “The Believer”
Most Common Misconception
Many translations render Al-Mu’min as “The Believer” — this is linguistically and theologically incorrect when applied to Allah.
Allah does not “believe” in the sense of having faith — belief implies uncertainty that is resolved by trust. Allah has perfect knowledge, not belief. The word mu’min has two different meanings depending on who it is applied to:
• For humans: mu’min = believer (one who has iman/faith) — فَاعِل pattern
• For Allah: Al-Mu’min = Giver of Security / Confirmer of Truth — مُفْعِل (causative) pattern — the One who CAUSES amaan in others

The Three Meanings of Al-Mu’min for Allah
Classical scholars identified three complementary dimensions of this Name when applied to Allah:
The Prophet ﷺ as Al-Amin — Evidence for Prophethood
Bukhari 4971 — The Prophet ﷺ uses his Al-Amin reputation as proof:
“O gathering of Quraysh — if I told you that an army is behind that mountain coming to attack you, would you believe me?” They said: “Yes — we have never known you to lie.” He said: “Then I am warning you of a severe punishment ahead.”
The Prophet ﷺ’s identity as Al-Amin (the trustworthy) was so established that even his enemies acknowledged it. He used this established Amanah as the opening argument for his prophethood. The same root (أ-م-ن) that describes Allah’s Name Al-Mu’min also describes the prophetic quality that made his message credible.
Iman and Amaan — Faith IS Safety
One of the most profound insights from this root: Iman (faith) and Amaan (safety/security) are not merely related — they describe the same inner reality from different angles.
- A person who has true Iman in Al-Mu’min is in a state of Amaan — they have found safety in Allah and are free from the existential fear that haunts those without faith.
- Quran 6:82: “Those who believe and do not mix their belief with injustice (dhulm) — they will have security (amn), and they are rightly guided.” The Quran explicitly links Iman with Amaan.
- When the Prophet ﷺ explained this verse, the Companions were troubled — who can be entirely free of dhulm? He explained: dhulm here means shirk (Quran 31:13) — the one who has Iman without shirk has amaan.
Ameen After Dua — Calling on Al-Mu’min
Bukhari 780 (Sahih) — The Power of Ameen:
The Prophet ﷺ said: “When the Imam says Ameen, say Ameen — for whoever’s Ameen coincides with the Ameen of the angels will have all his previous sins forgiven.”
Ameen = “O Al-Mu’min (the Confirmer of Truth) — confirm this Dua.” Every time a believer says Ameen after Al-Fatiha, they are calling on Al-Mu’min by the derivative of His Name to respond to their supplication.
How to Make Dua with Al-Mu’min
- “Ya Mu’min, aminni” — O Giver of Security, grant me amaan (safety). Specifically when afraid, in danger, or seeking divine protection from any harm.
- When travelling — The Prophet ﷺ’s travel dua includes seeking Allah’s Amaan: “Allahumma inna nas’aluka fi safarina hadha al-birra wat-taqwa…” — Muslim 1342.
- For protection of family — “Ya Mu’min, ahfadh ahli wa awladi” — invoking Al-Mu’min’s protection over those you love and are responsible for.
- For Iman itself — “Ya Mu’min, thabbit Imani” — O Giver of Iman, keep my faith firm. Al-Mu’min is the source of Iman; asking Him to keep Iman firm is theologically consistent.
