A complete guide to Al-Jabbar — Name 9 of the 99 Names of Allah. Covers the dual root meanings of ج-ب-ر (compeller AND restorer of broken things), how algebra gets its name from this root, why Jabbar is negative for humans but positive for Allah, the Jabarut dhikr (Abu Dawud 873), and how Al-Jabbar is the Name for the broken-hearted.
The Source Entity — Al-Jabbar in the Quran
Quran 59:23 — Al-Jabbar in the sequence of Power Names:
ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْجَبَّارُ ٱلْمُتَكَبِّرُ ۚ سُبْحَٰنَ ٱللَّهِ عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ
“…Al-Aziz, Al-Jabbar, Al-Mutakabbir — exalted is Allah above what they associate with Him.”
Quran 40:35 — Jabbar used negatively for humans:
كَذَٰلِكَ يَطْبَعُ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ قَلْبِ مُتَكَبِّرٍ جَبَّارٍ
“Thus does Allah seal every arrogant (mutakabbir) and Jabbar (tyrant) heart.”
The contrast is stark and deliberate: in Quran 59:23, Al-Jabbar is a glorious Name of Allah. In Quran 40:35 and elsewhere, jabbar applied to humans describes a tyrant whose heart Allah seals. This is not contradiction — it is the Quran establishing who has the right to jabr (compulsion) and who does not. Only Al-Jabbar has that right — created beings who claim it become jabbars in the negative sense.
Arabic Root Analysis — ج-ب-ر
| Arabic | Transliteration | Meaning | Dimension |
|---|---|---|---|
| ج-ب-ر | j-b-r | To set a broken bone, to compel, to restore, to force | The root carries BOTH meanings simultaneously — healing AND compelling. This dual nature is the essence of Al-Jabbar. |
| جَبْر | Jabr | Setting a fracture / restoration / compulsion | Medical: bone-setting. Mathematical: algebra (Al-Jabr = restoration of broken equations). Theological: divine compulsion of destiny. |
| جَبَّار | Jabbār | For Allah: The Compeller and Restorer. For humans: tyrant | فَعَّال pattern — intensive and habitual. Allah habitually compels His decree AND habitually restores the broken. |
| جَبَرُوت | Jabarūt | Divine omnipotence, the realm of absolute power | Abstract noun — the fullness of Al-Jabbar’s attribute. Used in the Sujood dhikr: “Subhana dhil-jabarut” — Abu Dawud 873. |
| جَبِيرَة | Jabīrah | A splint / plaster cast (medical) | The tool used to set broken bones — directly from this root. In Fiqh: Jabīrah Wudu = the ruling on performing Wudu/Tayammum when a splint covers a wound. |
| الجَبْر | Al-Jabr | Algebra — the mathematical discipline | Al-Khwarizmi named algebra after jabr (restoration of broken equations). The word “algebra” in English comes directly from Arabic “al-jabr” — from this root. |
How Algebra Got Its Name from Al-Jabbar’s Root
Historical Information Gain — What No Competitor Covers
In 820 CE, the Muslim mathematician Muhammad ibn Musa Al-Khwarizmi wrote a treatise titled:
“Kitab al-Mukhtasar fi Hisab al-Jabr wal-Muqabala”
“The Compendious Book on Calculation by Restoration and Balancing”
In algebra, al-jabr referred to the operation of moving a term from one side of an equation to another to “restore” balance — exactly like setting a broken bone restores the limb’s integrity. The English word “algebra” entered via Latin “algebra” from Arabic “al-jabr.” Every student of mathematics in the world today uses a word derived from the same root as Allah’s Name Al-Jabbar — the Restorer of all that is broken.
The Two Dimensions — One Name, Complete Justice
Ibn al-Qayyim: “Al-Jabbar compels the tyrant to his fate and restores the oppressed to justice — the very same action, the very same attribute, working from two sides of the same reality. This is perfect divine justice: the force that crushes the oppressor is the same force that lifts the oppressed.”
Jabbar in the Quran — Negative for Humans, Positive for Allah
| Verse | Applied to | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Quran 59:23 | Allah | Positive — The Compeller whose decree governs all, the Restorer who heals the broken |
| Quran 19:14 | Yahya AS praised for NOT being jabbar | “And dutiful to his parents — not jabbar or disobedient.” Jabbar here = tyrant who forces will on others |
| Quran 19:32 | Isa AS distancing himself | “And He has not made me jabbar or wretched.” Isa AS confirms he is a servant, not a compeller — all jabr belongs to Allah |
| Quran 40:35 | Human tyrants | “Thus does Allah seal every arrogant jabbar heart.” The human jabbar is the enemy of truth — his heart is sealed. |
| Quran 50:45 | Prophet ﷺ is NOT | “You are not a jabbar over them.” The Prophet ﷺ’s role is guidance, not compulsion — compulsion belongs to Allah alone |
The Dhikr of Jabarut — Abu Dawud 873
Abu Dawud 873, Nasa’i 1050 (Sahih) — In Ruku’ and Sujood:
سُبْحَانَ ذِي الْجَبَرُوتِ وَالْمَلَكُوتِ وَالْكِبْرِيَاءِ وَالْعَظَمَةِ
“Subhana dhil-jabarut wal-malakut wal-kibriya’ wal-‘azamah — Glory be to the Possessor of Jabarut (divine omnipotence), Malakut (divine kingdom), Kibriya’ (supreme greatness), and ‘Azamah (grandeur).”
Four of the mightiest divine attributes combined in one dhikr. Jabarut = the realm/fullness of Al-Jabbar’s attribute. Malakut = the realm of Al-Malik’s sovereignty. Kibriya’ = connected to Al-Mutakabbir (greatness that belongs only to Allah). ‘Azamah = grandeur. Recited in the position of maximum physical submission — the human body is lowest when proclaiming Allah’s highest attributes.
Al-Jabbar — The Name for the Broken-Hearted
This is the dimension most translators miss entirely. The bone-setting meaning of jabara is not incidental — it is central to understanding why this Name is a source of profound comfort:
Hadith Qudsi — The Broken-Hearted and Al-Jabbar:
Ibn Abbas RA narrated that Allah says: “I am with the broken-hearted (al-munkasir qalbuhu).” — Ibn Majah 4217, Al-Bayhaqi (chains debated but content affirmed by scholars).
The word munkasir (broken) connects to the same semantic field as jabara. Where hearts are broken — by loss, grief, sin, oppression — Al-Jabbar (the Restorer) is specifically present. This is why scholars of Tazkiyah (spiritual purification) say Al-Jabbar is the Name to invoke when feeling spiritually shattered.
How to Make Dua with Al-Jabbar
- “Ya Jabbar, ujbur kasr-i” — O Restorer, mend my brokenness. The classical Arabic formula used by scholars of the heart: asking Al-Jabbar to set the spiritual fracture the way a bone-setter sets a broken bone.
- In Ruku’ and Sujood — “Subhana dhil-jabarut wal-malakut wal-kibriya’ wal-‘azamah” — Abu Dawud 873. The most authentic dhikr that directly invokes Jabarut.
- When oppressed — “Ya Jabbar, ujbur al-madhloomeena wa akhdhil al-dhalimeen” — O Compeller, restore the oppressed and subdue the oppressors. Invoking both dimensions simultaneously.
- After a loss or grief — Al-Jabbar is the specific Name for grief and spiritual brokenness. Scholars recommend: “Ya Jabbar” repeated in moments of overwhelming loss — connecting to the bone-setting mercy of Allah.
