Part of the series: 99 Names of Allah — Name 8 of 99 | ← Al-Muhaymin (Name 7)

The Source Entity — Al-Aziz in the Quran

Quran 59:23 — Al-Aziz in the sequence:

ٱلْمُهَيْمِنُ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْجَبَّارُ ٱلْمُتَكَبِّرُ ۚ سُبْحَٰنَ ٱللَّهِ عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ

“…Al-Muhaymin, Al-Aziz, Al-Jabbar, Al-Mutakabbir — exalted is Allah above what they associate with Him.”

Quran 63:8 — All ‘Izzah belongs to Allah:

وَلِلَّهِ ٱلْعِزَّةُ وَلِرَسُولِهِۦ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَلَٰكِنَّ ٱلْمُنَٰفِقِينَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ

“And to Allah belongs all Al-‘Izzah (honour/might), and to His Messenger, and to the believers — but the hypocrites do not know.”

The declaration “Wa lillahi al-‘Izzah” — all honour belongs to Allah — is the theological foundation of this Name. All dignity that any created being possesses is derivative: granted by Al-Aziz, conditional, and temporary. The one who forgets this and seeks dignity from creation enters the path of the hypocrites who “do not know.”

Arabic Root Analysis — ع-ز-ز

Arabic Transliteration Meaning Application
ع-ز-ز a-z-z Might, preciousness, invincibility, rarity The root encompasses three distinct but related meanings — all apply to Allah simultaneously
عَزِيز Azīz Mighty, precious, dear, honoured Name of Allah (90+ Quranic occurrences). Also used for humans: “Ya ‘azizi” = “my dear one” in Arabic — showing the word has tenderness as well as power
عِزَّة ‘Izzah Honour, might, glory, dignity Quran 63:8: “Wa lillahi al-‘izzah” — all ‘izzah belongs to Allah. The noun that Al-Aziz possesses in absolute measure
أَعَزَّ A’azza To honour someone, to strengthen them Allah a’azza (honours) whomever He wills — Quran 3:26. The ‘izzah a believer receives is a gift from Al-Aziz
عَزَّ Azza Became mighty, became rare, became precious Arabic proverb: “Man ‘azza bazza” — whoever becomes mighty/rare takes the prize. But true ‘izzah = only Allah’s
عَزْل Azl / ‘Uzlah Isolation, withdrawal Related — something ‘aziz (rare/precious) becomes isolated in its uniqueness. Allah’s ‘Izzah is unique because He alone possesses it essentially.

The Three Meanings of ‘Izzah — All Apply to Allah Simultaneously

Meaning 1

Invincible Strength

No one can overcome, defeat, or weaken Allah. His decrees cannot be overturned, His plans cannot be foiled. Quran 35:44: “And Allah is not to be impeded by anything in the heavens or the earth — indeed He is All-Knowing, All-Powerful.” Al-Aziz = unconquerable.

Meaning 2

Supreme Rarity / Preciousness

‘Aziz in Arabic means rare, precious, beyond price. Allah is ‘aziz because there is nothing like Him — He is utterly unique (Quran 112:4). His mercy, His forgiveness, His guidance — these are precious beyond any worldly value. The gift of Iman is the most ‘aziz thing a human can possess.

Meaning 3

Overpowering Dominance

Al-Aziz overcomes all — no rival, no enemy of Allah’s plan ultimately prevails. Quran 58:21: “Allah has written: I will surely overcome (la-aghlibanna) — I and My messengers. Indeed Allah is Qawiyy, ‘Aziz.” Every plot against Islam ultimately fails; every attempt to extinguish the light of Allah is defeated.

Al-Aziz — The Most Paired Name in the Quran

Al-Aziz is almost never used alone — it is almost always paired with another Name. Each pairing reveals how Allah’s ‘Izzah operates in that context:

Pairing Count Theological Meaning Key Verse
Al-Aziz + Al-Hakim 42 times His might is always governed by perfect wisdom — He is never mighty in a way that is unwise or unjust. Power without wisdom is tyranny; wisdom without power is helplessness. Al-Aziz al-Hakim = perfect. Quran 2:228, 3:6, 4:56
Al-Aziz + Ar-Rahim 6 times His might does not prevent mercy — He is simultaneously invincible AND ever-merciful. Appears after prophetic stories: despite His power to punish, He is Merciful. Quran 26:9 after the story of Musa ﷺ. Quran 26:9, 26:68, 36:5
Al-Aziz + Al-Ghaffar 3 times The Mighty One who is also the Most Forgiving. Power paired with forgiveness — He could punish with ease, yet He forgives. Quran 39:5 closes a passage about the creation of the heavens and earth. Quran 38:66, 39:5, 40:42
Al-Aziz + Al-Jabbar / Al-Mutakabbir Quran 59:23 The three Names of overwhelming divine power grouped together — Al-Aziz (might), Al-Jabbar (compulsion), Al-Mutakabbir (supreme majesty). The full declaration of divine power over all of creation. Quran 59:23

Seeking ‘Izzah from Humans — The Quranic Warning

Quran 4:139 — The Prohibition:

“Those who take disbelievers as allies instead of believers — do they seek ‘Izzah with them? But all ‘Izzah belongs to Allah.”

Ibn al-Qayyim: seeking dignity, honour, and strength from those who have rejected Allah is the ultimate error — you are seeking ‘izzah from the very beings who have cut themselves off from its only Source. The humiliation they offer is permanent; the honour from Al-Aziz is eternal.

Al-Aziz and the Believer’s Dignity — Quran 63:8

Quran 63:8 establishes the chain of ‘Izzah: Allah → His Messenger → believers. This chain is a theological fact with practical implications:

  • The believer has genuine dignity — not borrowed, not pretended, but real — because it flows from Al-Aziz Himself.
  • This dignity cannot be stripped by any human — a believer who is imprisoned, persecuted, or humiliated still has ‘izzah from Al-Aziz, even if the world cannot see it.
  • The Prophet ﷺ’s life demonstrated this: expelled from Mecca, boycotted, mocked — yet the ‘izzah of Al-Aziz was with him. The Quraysh who mocked him had the apparent worldly power — but who is remembered with honour 1,400 years later?

How to Make Dua with Al-Aziz

  • “Ya Aziz, a’izzni” — O Almighty, honour me / strengthen me. When facing humiliation, oppression, or feeling powerless against people or circumstances.
  • Quran 3:26 — the Malikal-Mulk dua includes: “wa tu’izzu man tasha’ wa tudhillu man tasha’” — You honour whom You will and humiliate whom You will. Specifically addressing Al-Aziz’s power to grant ‘izzah.
  • When seeking strength for a righteous cause — “Ya Aziz, a’in-ni ‘ala deen-ik” — O Almighty, help me in Your religion. Asking Al-Aziz to lend His might to your righteous endeavour.
  • When oppressed — “Hasbiyallahu la ilaha illa huwa ‘alayhi tawakkaltu wa huwa Rabb al-‘Arsh al-‘Azim” — Quran 9:129. Entrusting yourself to Al-Aziz when human might is arrayed against you.

What Al-Aziz Teaches the Believer

Your dignity is from Al-Aziz — never beg for it

Umar RA: “We were a people humiliated — then Allah honoured us through Islam. If we seek honour through anything other than what Allah honoured us with, He will humiliate us.” Knowing Al-Aziz means knowing your dignity is inalienable when you hold to His deen — and begging for it from creation is pointless.

No enemy of Allah ultimately wins

Quran 58:21: “Allah has written — I will overcome, I and My Messengers.” History confirms: every power that rose against the truth fell. Pharaoh drowned. The Quraysh capitulated. Every attempt to destroy the Quran failed. The believer who internalises Al-Aziz does not panic at the power of falsehood — because Al-Aziz always overcomes.
